LATE HAJI KARIM MOHAMMED SULEMAN ALIAS CUMMOO SETH

fOUNDER

A few words about our Founder

Imagine a Cutchi Memon businessman asking the British Governor for a plot to start a girl's school in Muslim locality and the Governor instead offering him a large piece of land at a better location in the city, away from the Muslim neighborhood. The businessman insisted that a small plot won't do but it should be in the heart of Muslim pocket because, as he said, his community girls would not be able to walk to the location British Governor was offering.

The Governor must have smiled but listening to the argument of a Muslim businessman, he conceded to his request.

And in 1936, a girls' school, a madrasa for adult literacy and a maternity home was established at Kambekar Street in the heart of Muslim locality. That small beginning now has taken a shape of a full fledged campus where a girl, if she joins the nursery, will come out with a graduation degree - No better way to fulfill the dream of Haji Karim Mohammed Suleman!

Kammu Sait, as he was popularly known was born in a prosperous business family of Bhuj but after migrating to Mumbai, had to start afresh, that too, as a hawker. It was the honesty, integrity and hard work that made an ordinary hawker selling cloth into a most loved businessman. For years, he provided free meal to poor and everyday about 500 people enjoyed "Kammu Sait Ki Khichdi". He built Jamat Khana, a Musafirkhana for the Haj Pilgrims and a students' hostel. He breathed his last on May 24,1886.

I wish all the best to all the students for their career and academic pursuit.

With Best wishes,

LATE HAJI KARIM MOHAMMED SULEMAN ALIAS CUMMOO SETH
